Center for Middle East Development

The mission of the UCLA Center for Middle East Development (CMED) is to conduct research and to provide educational programs on matters of political, economic, and diplomatic development in the Middle East broadly conceived. CMED studies issues of regional security, conflict resolution and Track 2 diplomacy. CMED has a multi-tiered regional security program where it implements these objectives by conducting conferences; preparing reports; sponsoring study groups on such subjects as democratic culture, Gulf security, regional business and economics, the new Asian role in the region, technological cooperation across borders, and humanitarian intervention.

CMED also maintains an educational website, and publishes monographs and a peer-reviewed book series (by Routledge Publishers). CMED is working towards conducting a wide range of executive seminars at UCLA to aid young individuals in the region to enhance their skills in such areas as law, business, civil society, and teaching. CMED also brings speakers to campus, but does not sponsor them on its own, providing them to other centers and to courses. Students and faculty are engaged in CMED activities wherever possible.
